Barry….What thought provoking and startlingly honest account of your life. I was born in Rastrick some 18 months before you. I’m amazed at the almost philosophical way you endured the hardships and extreme physical, sexual and emotional abuse. I was extremely naïve and had no knowledge and was never aware that such things even existed at that time. Bullying was prevalent around Brighouse and environs. We were bullied and in return I’m ashamed to say we also bullied….. I really think you should consider writing a book. ………….God Bless You.

  3. Paul…thanks for your comments. I find that the only way to be or try to be in philosophical about the stuff that went on in my early life. As for bullying I can’t really remember being bullied at school – I always seemed to have a ‘minder’ but of course it did go on outside school in many forms as you have read.
By the way, how did you find out about my blog?

    Hi Barry
I was looking for the history of Rastrick. Were you in the same year at Rastrick Grammar as Philip ‘Jimmy’ Bond?

    Paul

  5. He was one of my best mates!!!! He comes later on in the story. You know his brother is really called James Bond?
Do you know Jimmy – I would find it difficult to call him Phillip ☺
I always remember his Mother (Winifred) kind of blamed me for him not passing his O-Levels and then when I got 7 she she actually admitted what she had thought and apologised to me personally. Now, that’s a woman!

    Hello Barry
I lived next door to the Bonds in Rayner Road. I was friends for years with both of them. Stanley their Dad died of a dementia related illness. James was very old fashioned and acted sometimes like an old man. The name James was a family tradition, Their granddad was the landlord of the Duke of York that was on the Rastrick side of the river at Bridge end. Demolished long before we were born. The e-mail I gave you is not working, because of problems at Virgin Media. If you want a quick reply use brigusser@aol.com.

  7. Hi Paul!
I am so sorry I haven’t replied to your comment here – it’s been 5 months! Very remiss of me but I haven’t been updating my blog because I have been busy for the last 8 months. I have started to write a couple of other chapters now and will be posting soon.
So, you knew both James and Philip – if it was as school-kids we must have met! Do you see either of them now. Last I heard was that Philip has a business in Brighouse but I haven’t been home for ages.
I am so sorry to hear about their Dad – I couldn’t remember his name. Is Winifred still around? I remember they were or seemed to be much older than my Mother who would be 75 now.
The pub I remember that is demolished now on the Brighouse side was ‘The Bridge Inn’ (?) and there was a shop on the corner too – a sweet-shop (?) Do you remember those? Near to Squire’s bakery. Loved the smell coming from there….
Hope you get this and that you and yours are well.

    Barry
